Is artificial turf better than real turf?
The answer to this question really depends on the customer, and what they are looking for from a grass or turfed area in their home.
There are benefits to both types of turf, however since this question is about artificial, synthetic or fake grass, we’ll answer it from that perspective.
There are three main benefits to choosing an artificial grass product. If you decide to purchase artificial turf after reading this article, we recommend that you purchase the best quality product you can afford. Some cheaper turfs can look okay when new, but they can deteriorate quite quickly due to substandard filaments(the material that makes the grass blades), materials and backing.
The first major benefit of artificial turf is that it requires no water. If you live in a dry climate, or an area experiencing El Nino related dryness, artificial turf will be an excellent choice. It will be green all year around, no matter the climate.
For those who hate the idea of pushing a mower around, you’ll be happy to know that artificial turf obviously requires no mowing. This means you get the weekends off to do more important things with your time. There is some maintenance depending on the turf style you choose, like removing leaves, occasional weeding, and possibly reviving the look of the turf with new sand infills or lifting the pile or ‘blades’ with a special brushing machine.
If you have Pets, one criticism of cheaper fake turfs is their ability to handle pet droppings or urine, but there are specific systems in quality ranges to take care of these things. Some pet-friendly grasses that we stock and recommend are specifically designed with extra perforation holes in the backing. During installation, we use a product called Pee Premium Infill that the installers mix with the sand to reduce odour over time (it works to break down the uric acid). Also, we stock and recommend specific cleaners which include P Off & Who Done It Spray that can mask any smells in higher-use areas.
As the proud homeowner, you will have no shade worries as artificial turf does not require light to grow, you can install it right under large shade trees, and get a green lawn wherever you want.
For all these reasons, artificial turf suits many customers.
For others natural or real turf in buffalo, kikuyu, couch or native varieties is the preferred choice.
At Melbourne Brick, we stock both artificial and real turfs and will be happy to advise you on the best choice for your needs. If you are a golfer, for example, you might want to look at the Supernatural Black Label range of putting greens, which feature unmatched quality and unrivalled playability. There are other artificial turfs that can be installed as multifunctional sports and entertainment areas.
