Geohex Erosion Control frequently asked questions (FAQs)

What is Geohex?

Geohex is an erosion control system that is designed to stabilize and reinforce the ground surface. It is made of 100% recycled post-consumer plastics and is more cost-effective than concrete and other bitumen-type products. The system comes in a standard size of 1000mm L x 500mm W, and can easily be cut with power tools to suit specific ground requirements such as positioning around a pole, tree or other immovable structure. The plastic, grid-like paver is easy to lay, easy to remove and can be recycled after use. The system is environmentally friendly, easy to install, and long-lasting, it helps stabilize soil and turf, enhances water-saving measures and improves safety on work sites.

What are the dimensions and weight of the Geohex pavers?

The Geohex pavers are standardly sized at 0.5 square meters. However, they feature embossed numeric measurements on the sides, allowing them to be cut to a custom size if necessary. Each individual paver weighs 2.3 kilograms.

Can the Geohex erosion control system be used anywhere?

The Geohex erosion control system can be implemented in a variety of soil and geological conditions. However, for sloped installations with a grade of 10 per cent or more, it is recommended to consult with the Geohex team for tailored advice on installation and selecting appropriate aggregate materials.

How durable is the Geohex Erosion Control System?

In one word, Geohex is STRONG!!

The Geohex Erosion Control System is highly durable and has a maximum load-bearing capacity of 1,200 tonnes per square meter when filled. This is significantly more than a standard semi-trailer truck’s weight, which is around 5 tonnes per square meter per axle.

Can the Geohex Erosion Control system be used on sloped ground?

Yes, the GEOHEX™ Erosion Control System can be used on sloped ground. For inclines greater than 10 per cent we recommend the use of ground pins.  Type 17 Bugle Head Screws, galvanised and a minimum of 300mm long can be screwed into the sub-grade without the need for hammering through the cell material.

For sloped installations greater than 10 per cent we recommend you speak with our team for support on installation and aggregate choice for best results.

Is it possible to move or adjust the Geohex pavers after they have been installed?

The Geohex pavers have a small amount of flexibility that allows for minor adjustments to be made or to follow any ground contours if necessary.

How much infill is recommended to fill each Geohex paver?

1m3 of aggregate will cover approximately 20sqm of Geohex.

What is the recommended infill material for the Geohex Erosion Control System?

While using a local product for infill is an option, using a coarse granulate material that comprises a mix of different sizes and grades that can be packed down into the matrix will produce the best results. For roads, cracker dust, road base or limestone are recommended. It’s important to note that any aggregate larger than 15mm will not settle into the void.

What is the optimal method for installing the Geohex pavers on the prepared base?

It is recommended to start laying the Geohex pavers from one corner with the female lugs facing outward. Once the starting point is determined, the pavers should be laid in a grid pattern for strength and durability and clicked into place.

How deep should the excavation be for laying the Geohex pavers?

A minimum excavation depth of 200mm is recommended for civil and mining applications. However, the final excavation depth will depend on the existing material in the installation area. For instance, a thicker base is required for water-soaked mud and sandy soils than for solid clay or rock bases. A 150mm compacted road base sub-layer is also recommended to be laid prior to installing the Geohex pavers.

Is it possible to use the Geohex Erosion Control System on sloped ground?

Absolutely! The Geohex Erosion Control System can be used on inclines as well. For sloped areas with a grade of 10% or more, we recommend using ground pins for added stability. Type 17 Bugle Head Screws, which are galvanized and at least 300mm long, can be screwed into the subgrade without needing to hammer through the cell material. If you’re working on a sloped area, feel free to reach out to our team for assistance and advice on the best installation and aggregate choices for your project.

How does the Geohex Erosion Control System enhance safety?

The Geohex Erosion Control System is designed to promote safety in a variety of ways. One of the main benefits is that it stabilizes turf and ground areas, which greatly reduces the potential for accidents to occur. When the ground is unstable, it can be difficult for people and machinery to move around safely. By stabilizing the ground, the Geohex Erosion Control System makes it much easier for people and equipment to move around, which greatly reduces the risk of accidents.

Another benefit of the Geohex Erosion Control System is that it minimizes the risk of machinery or livestock getting bogged in muddy areas. When the ground is wet and muddy, it can be difficult for heavy machinery and animals to move around. This can lead to accidents and damage to equipment and animals. By using the Geohex Erosion Control System, you can create stable ground that is less likely to become muddy, which greatly reduces the risk of accidents and damage.

In addition, the Geohex Erosion Control System is ideal for use in landscape applications. It can be used to prevent embankment subsidence and large movements of soil and rock. These are common problems in landscape applications, and they can lead to serious accidents and damage. By using the Geohex Erosion Control System, you can prevent these problems and keep people and property safe.

How does the geohex erosion control system promote water conservation?

The Geohex Erosion Control System is designed in a unique hexagonal shape which is non-porous, it captures water in the soil and diverts it into storage or detention tanks. This reduces the amount of surface water runoff and hence, minimizes soil erosion, and allows the captured rainwater to be used for secondary purposes such as irrigation or other purposes. This way the Geohex Erosion Control System promotes water conservation by collecting and storing water in the soil, reducing the dependency on external sources of water and making the most of natural resources. It also helps to preserve the natural water cycle and maintain healthy ecosystems in the area.
